According to Intuit, the software company behind Turbo Tax, the online tax provider has offered free file in partnership with the IRS for the past decade. But, with more than 95 million taxpayers in the U.S. eligible for free online tax preparation and e-filing, not many know about this offer.
For 2009 tax returns, the TurboTax Tax Freedom Edition is available to:
?All taxpayers eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
?Active duty military with an adjusted gross income of ,000 or less.
?All other taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of ,000 or less.
The IRS and the Free File Alliance have also extended the Free File program for an additional 5 years.
In addition, TurboTax also offers a free file program in select states.
Twenty states have created Free File Programs based upon the federal Free File Alliance model. The following states qualify for the free file program:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina,Vermont and West Virginia.
